Let’s be honest: if you’re asking this question, it’s probably 4pm on a Thursday, the forecast has just turned nasty, and somewhere on your site there’s a car park that turned into a skating rink last time it froze. You don’t need a lecture on isotherms. You need a number, and you need it fast.
Good news — we can move quickly. The slightly less snappy news is that we can’t give you a one-size-fits-all price off the top of our heads, because genuinely, nobody’s site is the same. But stick with us, because the process is a lot simpler (and quicker) than it sounds.
Why there’s no standard price list
There’s no standing charge, no retainer, and no “typical” rate we can quote you over the phone — and that’s a good thing, not a dodge. What you pay depends on:
- whether your site can be gritted mechanically with our spreaders, or needs hand gritting (pavements, ramps, anywhere a vehicle can’t reach)
- the size and layout of the site
- how close it sits to one of our existing rounds — we cover a large, often rural patch of Gloucestershire, as well as Swindon and Worcester, so a site slotting neatly into a round we already run is more efficient (and cheaper) than one miles from anywhere
Two sites that look similar on paper can end up priced quite differently once you factor those in. Bespoke sounds like a long word for “more admin,” but in practice it just means you pay for what your site actually needs.
Here’s the bit that actually saves you time: the marked-up map
Forget arranging a site visit and waiting a week for someone to walk round with a clipboard. Just send us a Google Earth image of your site with:
- the areas that need mechanical gritting marked up
- the areas that need hand gritting marked up
- anything unusual we should know about — gate codes, restricted hours, that one ramp everyone forgets about
That’s it. Because we can measure everything we need from the image, we can turn most quotes around the same day, with no site visit required and no obligation to go ahead.
Then you choose how you pay
Once we’ve quoted, you pick whichever suits your budgeting:
- Cost per visit — you only pay when we actually turn out and grit. No frost, no cost.
- Fixed annual cost — a single predictable figure based on an expected number of visits across the season, handy if you’d rather budget once and forget about it.
- A mix of both, if that fits your site or your finance team’s preferences better.
There’s no “right” answer — plenty of our customers pick cost per visit for flexibility, and plenty pick fixed cost because their finance director sleeps better with one number in the budget. Either way, you’re never paying a retainer for weather that never turns up.
