After eleven days of ice and snow, here are some handy hints on how to manage your site so it is safe and open for business whatever the winter weather.

A QUICK recap: temperatures dropped significantly over Gloucestershire and Swindon on Tuesday 6 December and stayed low for the next 11 days. Snow fell the first weekend settling at depths of 15cms on higher ground and 10cms were widespread. The freezing temperatures continued, plumbing depths of minus 11 some nights.

So how can companies achieve rapid clearance of their sites and maintain it?

  1. Clear the snow: if more than 2.5cms (an inch) of snow falls, clear it either by a snow plough or by hand and before it is driven on and compacted.
  2. Grit immediately after the snow plough to stop immediate re-icing.
  3. Continue to grit every night through a cold spell.

Gloucestershire Gritting’s customers who followed this protocol through the recent cold conditions had sites that were operational and safe throughout. Salt is not magic dust and is less effective once temperatures are below minus 10 degrees. While it will eventually clear snow, in the meantime the site is likely to be a major hazard for anyone trying to use it.

This site was not snow-cleared and was only gritted occasionally – the snow took several days to clear and froze to sheet ice at night.
