Ice on a car park, yard or footpath doesn’t wait for office hours — and neither do we. Gloucestershire Gritting provides overnight commercial gritting for businesses across Gloucestershire, Swindon and Worcester, so your premises are safe before the first person arrives for work.

How we decide when to grit

We monitor the Met Office’s Open Site forecasting service, which gives an icing risk specific to your postcode rather than a generic regional forecast. When that risk is confirmed, we grit overnight between 6pm and 6am, so surfaces are treated well before your staff, customers or deliveries arrive.

What we grit with

We use white marine de-icing salt, a by-product of Mediterranean seawater desalination. Unlike some rock salts, it doesn’t leave the grey residue that gets walked into offices, reception areas and shop floors.

Our fleet and depots

We run six Vale Engineering TS1200 high-speed 4×4-towed salt spreaders, each carrying up to two tonnes of salt — enough capacity to treat large sites without multiple return trips — plus smaller hand-held and pickup-mounted spreaders for tighter sites, and a dedicated snow clearance team for when conditions call for it. All our vehicles are Euro 5 compliant, and most are Euro 6, and we run an active vehicle replacement and maintenance programme to keep the fleet compliant with health and safety requirements. We operate from four local depots — north and south of Gloucester, in the North Cotswolds, and in Swindon — which keeps response times short across our coverage area. Pedestrian areas, footpaths and sites a vehicle can’t reach are gritted by hand.

How it’s priced

There’s no standing or retaining charge. Cost depends on your site rather than a flat rate — whether it can be gritted mechanically or needs hand gritting, its size and layout, and how close it sits to our other rounds all affect the price, and because we cover such a large, largely rural area, most quotes end up genuinely bespoke to the site. To get a quote, email us a Google Earth image of your site marked up showing the areas that need mechanical gritting, the areas that need hand gritting, and any special access requirements — this lets us give you an accurate, no-obligation quote without needing a site visit first. We then agree either a per-visit cost (you only pay when we actually grit), a fixed annual cost, or a mix of the two — whichever suits your budgeting.
