BRRRR – it’s a cold start to the New Year. The news too is pretty chilly for facilities managers seeking to keep their businesses running smoothly through the coldest part of the winter.
Confidence is now strong among British, European and American forecasters that a major Sudden Stratospheric Warming is about to be announced – and that triggers much talk of Beasts from the East. What we can say is that stratospheric warming occurs usually every other year and the Polar Night Jet Stream moves causing winds to change from our usual westerlies (warm (ish) and wet) to easterlies. Easterly winds bring cold and potential for snow and ice usually a week or so after the warming. How cold it will become is of course open to debate. So it is important to watch the forecasts closely.
